Things to Avoid

We do not recommend eating foods that are chewy, hard or crunchy.  They can break wires or knock off braces.  Sugary foods are a problem too.  Sugar is easily trapped by your braces or other appliances.  This can cause cavitities.  Some foods listed below are those you should avoid:

Chewy or Sticky Foods

  • Caramel, gummy candies
  • Bagels, pizza crust
  • Dried fruits
  • Gum

Hard or Crunchy Foods

  • Crunchy peanut butter
  • Ice
  • Nuts
  • Popcorn

Sugary Foods

  • Candy bars
  • Cookies, cakes, or other sweets
  • Sodas

If you do eat a sugary food, brush your teeth right away.  Don't keep a sugary food or drink in your mouth for a long time.  Never suck on a candy or slowly sip a soda.  Ask Dr. Kincaid about sugar-free candy or soda.
